What You Need to Know About Cows
Coloring in these printable cow illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new facts about these beautiful bovines!
Here are fifteen things you may not know about cows.
1. Social Animals:
Cows love hanging out with their friends in big groups called herds. Just like us, they have best friends and get stressed when separated from them. They’re also happy to share their space with chickens and other farm animals like horses and goats.
2. Four Stomachs Are Better Than One:
Cows have four stomachs that help them digest tough plants that other animals can't. Each stomach has a special job in breaking down grass and hay.
3. Stand Up Snoozers:
While cows can doze off standing, they prefer to lie down for a deep sleep. This ability allows them to quickly stand up if they sense danger, keeping them safe even when they're catching some Z's.
4. Super Sniffers:
Cows have an incredible sense of smell, and are able to detect odors up to 6 miles away! This keen sense helps them find fresh grass to eat, avoid predators, and stay close to their herd mates.
5. Colorblind Cows:
Cows are colorblind, meaning they have a hard time telling the difference between certain colors, such as red and green.
6. Panoramic View:
With eyes on the sides of their heads, cows can see almost all the way around them. This helps cattle spot sneaky predators like wolves, coyotes, and bears sneaking through the fence line.
7. Mooing Messages:
Cows 'moo' for many reasons - to say hello, I'm hungry, or watch out! Each cow's moo is unique, kind of like our voices.
8. Thirsty Giants:
Cows can drink up to 30 gallons of water every day. Water is important to help cows’ bodies stay hydrated and healthy, especially since they eat a lot of salty hay.
9. Memory Masters:
Cows have great memories. They can remember faces and places for a long time. So, if you make a cow friend, chances are they won't forget you.
10. Chew Champions:
With at least 50 chews per minute, cows are constantly munching. This helps them break down their food and get all the nutrients they need. Cows chew cud, which is when they regurgitate and rechew their food. While it sounds pretty gross, this is an essential process for digesting tough plant material.
11. Billion Cow March:
There are over 1 billion cows in the world, and you can find them in almost every country. In the United States alone, there are approximately 94 million dairy and beef cows. Some species, like Highland cows, have spread across the globe.
12. Milk Machines:
A dairy cow can produce 6 to 7 gallons of milk a day. That's enough to fill up more than 90 glasses of milk! Jersey cows are particularly prized for the high butterfat content of their milk which makes it creamy and rich.
13. Eco-Friendly Fertilizers:
Cow manure is not just waste; it's used as a natural fertilizer by farmers. It helps plants grow and keeps the soil healthy.
14. Caring for Calves:
A baby cow, called a calf, needs lots of love and special milk from its mom to stay healthy. Calves love to play and jump around, which helps them grow strong.
15. Methane Matters:
Cows play an important part in our planet's cycle by producing methane, a greenhouse gas. When cows digest their food, they release methane into the air, contributing to climate change. Efforts are underway to reduce these emissions, including changing their diet to lower methane production.
