What You Need to Know About Horses
Coloring in these printable horse illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new facts about these majestic creatures!
Here are fourteen things you may not know about horses.
1. Sleeping Secrets:
Horses can nap standing up thanks to their legs which can lock into place and stop them falling over. But, like us, they prefer to lie down for a deep sleep. They usually have a cozy barn or fenced pasture to snuggle down in if they live with humans. In the wild, they sleep out in the open.
2. Foal Facts:
Baby horses are called foals and can stand up and run just a few hours after birth. Their mom’s, known as a mare, use gentle nudges to get them moving. This fast start in life is important for wild horses, who need to be able to move with the herd and stay away from predators like wolves, bears, and coyotes.
3. No Vomiting:
Horses can't throw up, which means they have to be extra careful about what they eat. Their stomachs are designed in a special way that makes vomiting impossible.
4. A World of Beautiful Breeds:
There are more than 300 different breeds of horses, from the tiny but mighty Shetland pony to the grand and beautiful Friesian horse. Each breed has its own special characteristics and colorings, including black, gray, and rich chestnut.
5. Horse Love:
Horses are social animals and love being part of a herd. They make friends, play, and even have leaders within their group.
6. Speedy Horses:
The fastest-running horse ever recorded was a stallion (male horse) named Winning Brew, who raced at an incredible speed of 43.97 mph. Ridden by a jockey in Pennsylvania, USA, this achievement was recorded in the Guinness World Records.
7. Horses and Humans History:
People and horses have been buddies for over 5,000 years. Horses have helped with farming, transport, and even in battles during the Middle Ages. This long friendship shows how equines can be ideal pets and helpers on our adventures.
8. Teeth vs. Brain:
A horse's teeth take up more space in their head than their brain does. This might sound funny, but it tells us how important eating is for horses. Their big teeth help them munch on all kinds of plants like grass, hay, and dandelions.
9. Mane Magic:
A horse's mane is the long hair on its neck and one of its most beautiful features. Horses use their manes to swat away flies and keep warm in winter. Each horse's flowing mane is as unique as a fingerprint, making them stand out in a herd.
10. Side Eyes:
A horse’s eyes are on the sides of their head, giving them a super-wide view of their surroundings. This helps them spot a sneaky predator or a delicious patch of grass.
11. Smelling Super Power:
Horses have an amazing sense of smell. They use it to recognize friends, find food, and sense danger.
12. Hoofing Around:
A horse's hoof is made of keratin, the same stuff our hair and nails are made from. Their hooves are super strong and can carry their heavy bodies (and us) over all kinds of ground, from soft pastures to rocky trails.
13. Winter Coats:
Horses grow a thick winter coat to keep warm during cold months. This fluffy coat is like a built-in blanket that protects them from the chill. When spring comes, they shed this extra hair and look sleek and shiny for summer.
14. Horsepower:
The term "horsepower" was created to compare the strength of steam engines to horses. One "horsepower" unit equals the power of one horse.
These fun facts show how special horses are, from their beautiful mane to their unique friendship with people. If you know more cool things about these amazing animals, share them below. You might inspire a new horse coloring page design!
