Coloring in these printable cheetah illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some interesting facts!
Here are ten things you may not know about these big cats.
1. Super Speedsters:
Cheetahs are the fastest land animals in the world. They can run up to 60-70 miles per hour (97-113 km/h) and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3 seconds – that's faster than most sports cars!
2. Spotted Coats for Camouflage:
Cheetahs have beautiful spotted coats that help them blend in with the grasses and bushes of their environment. This natural camouflage makes it hard for their prey to see them.
3. Built for Speed:
A cheetah's body is perfectly designed for speed. They have long, slender bodies, long legs, and a flexible spine that allows them to stretch out and cover about 30 feet (9 meters) in one stride when running at full speed.
4. Amazing Eyesight:
Cheetahs have incredible eyesight during the day and can spot prey from as far as 3 miles (5 kilometers) away. Their eyes have a special layer that reflects light back through the retina, helping them see better in bright light.
5. Non-Retractable Claws:
Unlike other cats, cheetahs can't fully retract their claws. This gives them extra grip on the ground when they are running at top speed.
6. Tail as a Rudder:
A cheetah uses its long, muscular tail like a rudder on a boat to help it steer and keep balance when running very fast or turning quickly.
7. Chirping Cats:
Cheetahs don't roar like powerful lions. Instead, they make unique bird-like sounds called chirps. Mothers chirp to call their cubs, and cheetahs also chirp when they are excited or stressed.
8. Fast and Furious, but Not for Long:
Cheetahs can only keep their top speed for a short distance, about 300-400 meters. After a high-speed chase, they need to rest for about half an hour to catch their breath and cool down.
9. Cubs with Mohawks:
Baby cheetahs, called cubs, have a long, fluffy mane on their back called a "mantle." This mantle helps camouflage them in the grass and makes them look like a honey badger, a fierce animal that most predators avoid.
10. Cheetahs Don't Like to Share:
Cheetahs are solitary animals, which means they like to live alone. Mothers live with their cubs, and sometimes brothers from the same litter will stay together, but mostly, each cheetah has its own territory.
These fascinating facts make cheetahs an exciting topic for kids to learn more about! What else do you know about these beautiful animals? Leave a comment and teach us something new!
