Coloring in these printable giraffe illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new and interesting wildlife facts!
Here are fourteen things you may not know about these beautiful animals.
1. Sky-High Heights:
With the title of the tallest mammal on Earth, an adult giraffe can reach up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) in height.
2. Neck-to-Neck with Humans:
Just like us, these gentle giants have seven vertebrae (small bones) in their long necks. However, each vertebra in a giraffe's neck is super-sized, reaching over 10 inches (25 centimeters) long.
3. Tongue Twisters:
Giraffes have incredibly long tongues that can stretch to about 18 inches (45 centimeters). Their tongues are a darker color, which is believed to protect them from the sun's harsh rays. These tongues can twist and wrap around branches, making them perfect for plucking tasty leaves and avoiding thorns.
4. A Heart That Works Overtime:
A giraffe's heart can weigh up to 25 pounds (11 kilograms) and is powerful enough to pump blood all the way up their long necks to their brains. This is no small feat and is essential for keeping these tall creatures upright and healthy.
5. Spots Like Snowflakes:
No two giraffes have the same pattern of spots, which means each giraffe is unique. Their spots come in different shades, from lighter colors to darker colors. This helps them blend into their natural surroundings.
6. Treetop Diners:
Giraffes use their long necks to reach leaves that other animals can't. They favor acacia leaves, which are rich in nutrients and water.
7. Baby Giraffe’s Big Entrance:
When a newborn giraffe, or calf, is born, it has a rather dramatic entrance to the world. It drops about 6 feet (1.8 meters) from its mother to the ground!
This fall helps the calf to start breathing and prepares it for standing and walking. Within just an hour, the adorable giraffe is up and ready to explore.
8. Social Butterflies of the Savanna:
Giraffes are social animals, living in groups called towers. These groups can change daily, as giraffes join or leave to wander.
9. Sleepy Time, Giraffe Style:
These towering mammals need surprisingly little sleep, catching z's for only 5 to 30 minutes a day! A giraffe can sleep standing up, making it easier to stay alert for any lurking predators.
10. The Silent Type? Think Again!
Giraffes were once thought to be silent, but they actually make a variety of sounds, including hums and grunts. These sounds are often heard at night when other animals are snoozing.
11. Conserving Water Like a Camel:
Though they might look very different, giraffes are similar to camels in how they conserve water. They can go weeks without drinking, getting most of their water from the leaves they eat. In the scorching heat of their habitat, this ability is a real lifesaver.
12. Speedy Sprinters:
Giraffes can run as fast as 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour) over short distances. Their speed comes in handy when they need to escape predators.
13. Eyelashes to Envy:
Long, fluttery eyelashes protect a cute giraffe’s eyes from the sun and sand. They’re both pretty and practical!
14. A Conservation Call:
Giraffes face several threats in the wild, from habitat loss to poaching, which has led to a decline in their populations. This majestic animal is now listed as vulnerable or endangered in some areas.
