Coloring in these printable husky illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some fantastic facts about these cuddly canines!
Here are fourteen things you may not know about huskies.
1. Eyes of the Arctic Rainbow:
Huskies' eye colors, from blue to brown or even one of each, are due to genetics. This unique feature, known as heterochromia, is totally normal for them and adds to their unique look.
2. Built-In Snowsuits:
These snow dogs have a double coat that does more than just shed all over your house. The undercoat is thick and keeps the huskies warm, while the topcoat repels water. This double layer traps air, providing excellent insulation against the cold.
3. Sled-Pulling Champs:
Originally bred by the Chukchi people in Siberia, huskies can pull about 1.5 times their body weight. This makes them the perfect choice for transporting heavy goods.
4. Marathon Runners with Paws:
With their incredible stamina, huskies can run up to 40 miles a day. This makes them superb long-distance runners. They’re capable of participating in sled races like the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, that cover large, snowy areas.
5. Conversationalists of the Canine World:
Huskies use a wide range of sounds to communicate, from howls to whines. This "talking" is a great way for them to express themselves with their dog peers and make their humans say, “Awwwww!”
6. Friend to All:
These sled dogs are known for their sociable nature, often showering affection on their humans. Huskies’ gentle character means they make a great furry friend to young children as well as older children and adults. This does mean that huskies make rubbish guard dogs. They’re just friendly, meaning they're more likely to welcome intruders than scare them away!
7. Dirt-Defying Coats:
The husky's coat has a special layer that naturally repels dirt and odors. The rough texture of their topcoat allows dirt to easily fall off or be brushed out. This means they don't need baths as often as other breeds.
8. Fur-nado Season:
When huskies "blow their coat," they shed their undercoat in clumps. This happens twice a year and requires regular brushing from their owners. If you know, you know!
9. Chase Masters:
These canines love chasing smaller animals. This instinct comes from their sled dog history and means owners need to keep a close eye on their huskies when they’re off leash.
10. Escape Artists Extraordinaire:
Similarly, huskies are known for their ability to escape from secure yards. They can dig under fences or even open gates. They’re always looking for a bit of adventure outside their home or garden.
11. Energy to Spare:
These dogs need plenty of exercise to stay happy. (Just think about those sled dog genetics!) Without enough physical activity, huskies can become bored. As a result, they may carry out destructive behaviors like chewing and scratching as a way to use up their extra energy.
12. Heroes of World War II:
Huskies played an important role in WWII, carrying out search and rescue missions in Arctic conditions. Their resilience and strength made them allies in the toughest environments.
13. Sled-Dog Superstar:
A husky dog named Balto became a national hero when he led his sled team to deliver medicine to Alaska in harsh winter conditions. His bravery is remembered with a statue in Central Park, NY, celebrating his life-saving journey.
14. Magical Stories and Mythical Heroes:
Siberian folklore views huskies as protectors between our human world and the spirit world. Though these interesting stories are mythical, they show how much people admire and feel connected to these majestic animals.
I hope these fantastic facts have helped you appreciate just how amazing huskies are! Have you got any other nuggets of knowledge about these furry canines? Share them in the comments and you just might inspire a new husky coloring page design!
