Learn More About the Juneteenth Holiday

Coloring these Juneteenth pages is more than just a fun activity; it’s a chance to explore history and the significance of June 19th.

Here are ten things you may not know about this official federal holiday.

    1. Where “Juneteenth” Comes From

The name combines “June” and “nineteenth,” marking the date when freedom was announced in Texas. It’s also called Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Liberation Day.

    2. The Big Announcement

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and shared the news that all enslaved people were finally free. This announcement changed thousands of lives in an instant.

    3. Freedom Was Delayed

Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it didn’t take effect in Texas until 1865. That two-year delay shows how unfair the road to freedom was. People who enslaved others kept their power, even after the law said slavery was over.

    4. A Federal Holiday

It wasn't until 2021 that Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday. That recognition honors the holiday’s deep importance in American history.

    5. From Texas to Everywhere

Juneteenth started as a local celebration in Texas, but now people across the the world observe it. It’s a time to reflect, celebrate, and continue working toward justice.

    6. The Juneteenth Flag

You’ve probably seen the Juneteenth flag’s red, white, and blue colors. It symbolizes that all Americans are part of this nation, and it represents unity, freedom, and the ongoing fight for equality.

    7. Community Service

Many people celebrate Juneteenth by giving back to their communities, reinforcing the values of liberty and justice through acts of kindness and service.

    8. A Day for Community and Cultural Pride

Juneteenth celebrations are all about coming together, feeling connected, and honoring the past. Many events include music, food, speakers, and family-friendly activities that bring people together in joy and remembrance.

    9. A Learning Opportunity

Juneteenth is finally being taught more widely in schools. It’s a valuable moment in American history that helps students understand slavery, emancipation, and the ongoing fight for civil rights.

    10. Music and Dance

From gospel to hip-hop, music and dance are a huge part of Juneteenth celebrations. These art forms tell stories of struggle and freedom, and are a tangible expression of the joy of the holiday.

Exploring Juneteenth offers a glimpse into America's journey toward equality. Have more insights or stories about this national holiday? Please share them below – they may inspire a new Juneteenth coloring page design!
